Is This Feline Kennel and Planter the Cat’s Meow?

November 21, 2012 by

Pet abodes can take up precious space in small homes. So if you could house your cat (or small dog) and your plants at the same time in a single stylish combination kennel, container garden, and herb garden unit, that might be a good space-saving solution.

That’s just what designer Giovanni Tomasini has in mind with his Bastet, combination kennel and planter. Bastet has three main modules: at the top is a large flower pot; a middle circular vessel is designed as a place to grow catnip, and the bottom is a private level for fine feline or pooch accommodations.

Purrrty cool but I don’t know how you would keep kitty out of the plant. I love the design, and I don’t have cats so I don’t know, but is it desirable for one’s cat to snack on catnip–can it not make them rather frisky? Catnip (Nepeta cataria and other Nepeta species), a member of the mint family, is like an artificial cat pheromone that can, according to veterinarian Ramona Turner, make cats jump, and roll around, vocalize and salivate. Maybe that’s just a happy cat.
