Garden Up! Take Your Landcape to the Next Level

March 17, 2011 by

Talented landscape design duo Susan Morrison and Rebecca Sweet’s new book Garden Up! is out and you’ve seriously gotta get your hands on one.

A fan of vertical gardening, I love how these gals have packaged their combined creativity with loads of gorgeous photos and do-it-yourself suggestions so readers can not only be inspired, but can start to put some of these great ideas to work in their own spaces.

Creating an Urban Oasis

The section on urban gardens features a stunning wall incorporating porthole-shaped mirrors that create a focal point while also accentuating the light. The authors remind us about the positive impact urban gardens have on the environment, particularly in offsetting the heat island effect.

Austin designer Jenny Peterson’s New Orleans-inspired urban garden retreat is showcased with clever before and after vignettes detailing the colorful touches she added to her space.

From Garden to Plate

Morrison and Sweet offer tips and ideas about for growing edibles that will not only taste great, they’ll be delicious to look at, like these strawberries crawling up a PVC pipe.

Enjoy the eggs and also the green roof of your urban chicken coop!

A vertical edible garden that is as beautiful as it is practical.

Giving Ordinary Objects New Life as Containers

The book addresses recycling and repurposing objects, like this gutter cleverly transformed into a hanging vertical container garden.

“Just about anything can be reinvented as a planter,” Morrison and Sweet show us with these wonderful trellises, above.

Found objects anywhere can lend themselves to creating a vertical garden for your particular space.

Design Strategies and DIY
Garden Up! is full of great design ideas you can implement yourself, like the gladiator garden below.

The book shares some wonderful ideas for making the most of your small space with special attention to creating unique, beautiful environments. When discussing container gardens, the designers suggest strategically layering them to maximize your space while at the same time making it appear larger.
