Modern Avian Architecture

September 27, 2011 by

Inspired by legendary architect Mies van der Rohe’s famous Barcelona Pavilion from 1929, designer Monique Engelund has reinterpreted the building as a modern gathering space for birds and a sculptural focal point for the garden. The Bird Pavilion honors van der Rohe’s spirit, both in its simple geometry and in its materials–robust and durable acacia wood from sustainable European forests. While the birds take a dip in the black open air bird bath, food is served in the kitchen/dining room–two spikes composing the feeding table beneath the roof.
