Have a ton of left over plastic spoons from your last barbecue? Use them to make this chic petal vase! I was inspired by a ceramic  vase I saw at Zara and thought I’d give it a whirl using plastic spoons.

What you’ll need:

1. Inexpensive (ideally recycled) white plastic spoons–white will be easier to paint later. I used 60 spoons for a can with a 4 x 6 inch base.

2. Hot glue gun + extra glue sticks

3. White spray paint in high gloss. The high gloss will look as similar as possible to the original design’s ceramic finish.

4. Plastic tubing. You can find this very reasonably priced (and not in bulk) in the plumbing section of your local hardware store. I recommend getting it in clear or white for easy paint coverage.

5. Scissors. Make sure to use a pair of scissors heavy-duty enough to cut through your tubing.

6. Cylindrical metal can. This will be the form for the vase. Try to find something free of stickers or very dark labels. I used an old Starbucks hot cocoa can.

7. Masking Tape.

Step 1: Prep your can.

You’ll want to prep your can by painting it thoroughly before putting on your spoons. The end result will look much better if you do this now. If not, you’ll be spray painting endless layers later to cover all the nooks and crannies.

Step 2: Prep the spoons.

*This is where the inexpensive part comes in. If you, like I did, buy the most inexpensive plastic spoons out there, then you’ll achieve two things: 1) You’ll save money and 2) the cups of the spoons will break right off their handles with minimal effort. No cutting involved! However, if you can recycle used spoons, all the better.

Step 3: Glue on the spoon cups.

Start gluing your spoon cups at the top of your vessel. Starting at the top will give you the same layering effect as in the original Zara vase that inspired this project.

I like using hot glue because it dries fast. You really can’t move on to the next spoon until the previous one dries.

When you start the second row, make sure to glue in-between the two spoons above and about half-way down the first row. Essentially, each row should cover half of the row above it. Refer to the photos for guidance.

Step 4: Finish off the bottom.

This is where your plastic tubing comes into play. Measure how much tubing you will need to go around your can once at the bottom, then cut to fit. Locate the least attractive side of your vase. This is where the seam of your tubing will be. You don’t want to see that. Glue the tubing around the bottom in small sections. Don’t try to glue the whole thing at once–it will dry before you can place it properly.

Step 5: Paint it.

Give your vase a few coats of glossy white spray paint to make it all come together for a finished look.

You’re done! Now you have a place to arrange a bouquet of your favorite flowers.
