Holiday Pop-Up Shop in Milan Features Emerging Designers From SaloneSatellite

I’m not in Milan right now, but if I were I’d be heading to Design Supermarket. It’s an über cool holiday pop-up shop featuring the works of eleven emerging designers who exhibited their work at SaloneSatellite 2013, part of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile.

Let’s go shopping virtually or at least gaze wistfully at my favorite cutting-edge designs…

From September 27 until Christmas, SaloneSatellite teams up with La Rinascente to host this innovative holiday pop-up shop at the retailer’s flagship Milan location.

The curated group of designers includes one my favorites, Tania Da Cruz from Portugal, whose ceramic “wig”vases debuted at SaloneSatellite 2011 and are available for purchase at the pop-up.

Da Cruz also designed Fioriloto, a clever electrical cord cover resembling a vine. Not part of this sale, but I love it.

Represented designers from across the globe include: Karoline Fesser (Germany); Kaamos Group’s Katriina Nuutinen & Matti Syrjälä of Finland; from Chile are Matias Ruiz Malbran of Ruizsolar. And just for fun, Chilean Verónica Posada of Si Studio, whose topographic candle holder, below, forms colorful “floods” from wax drippings.

Featured from Italy are Ilaria Innocenti, whose Adobe terra cotta desk tools also hold plants; a flood waters-inspired rug from Acqua Alta’s Daniele Bortotto & Giorgia Zanellato; lighting from Antonio Forteleoni and Marcantonio Raimondi Malerba.

All products for sale are interpretations of the SaloneSatellite 2013 theme Design and Craftsmanship: Together for Industry which challenged participants to consider the marriage of traditional craftsmanship. modern design, and industrial manufacturing techniques.

Each item reinterprets and reworks “poor” materials such as wood, glass, iron, and terra cotta.

Some of my other SaloneSatellite 2013 favorites are not part of the holiday pop-up but are worth a nod: Swiss design studio Bernhard Burkhard’s Curt deck chair, above, leans against a surface for support, while Combo Colab’s Xtool seating/tables, below, are upcycled from crates.

From Spain, rocking chair factory (that’s all they make!) Mecedorama released their “Homeless” rocking chair, a colorful blend of some classic woven furniture designs.

La Rinascente has a long tradition of supporting the design world. In 1954, with iconic architect and designer Gio Ponti, the company launched the prestigious Compasso d’Oro (Golden Compass) Award which celebrates and promotes the best of Italian industrial design.

If you ever find yourself at this grande dame of department stores, head to the rooftop terrace for an incomparable view of the Duomo.

Want more? We’ve covered some great design from international design fairs like The London Design Festival (with the Modenus BlogTour) and Maison et Objet in Paris.
