Floating in a Suspended Cocoon Chair

April 16, 2012 by

I spotted these bentwood suspended chairs in Paris at last September’s Maison et Objet Outdoor show. Designed for his company, Concept Suspendu by William Lelasseux, the chairs offer a feeling of weightlessness while hanging (literally) out in the garden, or even indoors from the rafters.

Influenced by the natural design of a chrysalis–for which the chairs are in French named “chrysalide”–they are fashioned after the hard-shelled “pupa” of a moth or butterfly in transformation.

Each signed and numbered edition chair, which bears the ECOCERT certification, is made from French solid ash, stainless steel hardware, 100% cotton fabrics, with recyclable ropes and nets.

If hanging from the trees is not your thing or you don’t have a tree, you can imagine doing so indoors with a chair that hangs on a stand, above.

Lelasseux, who hails from a creative family–his father was a woodworker and his mother a fine artist– began his career as a graphic designer and model maker, later became a carpenter, then ultimately embarked on his current venture 12 years ago.

Bergdorf Goodman in New York City just ordered two with while iron stands, if you are itching to grab one for yourself.

What an ingenious idea. Great for city greening and water run-off projects.
